Why Is Deleting Files Not Enough?

ID: why-is-deleting-files-not-enough

When you delete a file, the operating system usually marks its storage space as available for new data. It does not always remove the original file contents immediately.
For example, if you delete a folder containing financial records, the folder may disappear from File Explorer. However, parts of the stored data can remain on the drive and may be recovered with suitable tools.
Formatting a hard drive also does not always provide secure data removal. A quick format mainly resets file system information instead of overwriting every area that held your files.
To prevent data recovery, you need a method that removes or makes the stored information unreadable.
