\b[A. E. Goodship] coauthored the 2005 <spatially offset Raman spectroscopy> paper with <E. R. C. Draper>, <M. D. Morris> and the laser-spectroscopy team. The reported buried-layer demonstration used <trans-Stilbene> beneath a scattering <Poly(methyl methacrylate)> layer.<Subsurface Probing in Diffusely Scattering Media Using Spatially Offset Raman Spectroscopy by P. Matousek and others>[byline and Abstract, physical feasibility demonstration]{ref}

The experiment's motivation is chemical access through an obscuring surface. It should be distinguished from a direct measurement of material strength: identifying a <Raman spectrum> beneath a surface does not by itself measure a specimen's <Young's modulus> or establish that it will resist fracture.

For an original illustration, two hypothetical specimens can have equal mineral-to-organic spectral ratios while one contains a large crack. The ratio records a compositional contrast, whereas crack geometry changes the mechanical load path. Combining <Raman spectroscopy> with a mechanical test can therefore answer a different question from either measurement alone. This is a general measurement distinction, not an additional experimental result attributed to the 2005 paper.
