An Algol binary is a <semidetached binary> in which an evolved, less massive <donor star> fills its <Roche lobe> while its more massive <mass gainer> remains near the <main sequence>. <Binary mass-ratio reversal> resolves the <Algol paradox>. Eclipsing members commonly have <Algol variable> light curves, but that observational class also includes detached systems.
