A 1,2-carbon migration interconverts adjacent tertiary alpha-hydroxy <carbonyl compounds>. Formation of a new <carbonyl> at the original carbinol <carbon> accompanies conversion of the original <carbonyl> into an <alcohol>. Unlike dehydration, the net process preserves both <oxygens>.
