An <anomeric effect> can favour an axial electronegative substituent at a cyclic acetal carbon. Donation from an endocyclic oxygen lone pair into an antiperiplanar exocyclic C–O antibonding orbital is one important contribution. Steric, electrostatic and solvent effects also influence the observed preference.
