= Aromatic compound
An <aromatic compound> contains a cyclic conjugated electronic system whose delocalization gives the characteristic stabilization and response associated with <aromaticity>. <Benzene> is the standard example; an <aromatic compound> need not have a noticeable smell.<IUPAC Compendium of Chemical Terminology, fifth edition (Gold Book)>[Aromaticity, entries A00441–A00442]{ref}
For a simple planar monocyclic conjugated system, <Hückel's rule> identifies the familiar $4n+2$ pi-electron closed-shell pattern. The geometric and electronic assumptions matter: having a ring or alternating drawn <chemical bonds> alone is insufficient. Magnetic response, bond geometry and energetic comparisons provide complementary evidence, and some more complicated systems require descriptions beyond that simple counting rule.
