The <asthenosphere> is a relatively weak region of the upper <mantle> below the mechanically strong <lithosphere>. A seismic <low-velocity zone> often occurs in this region, particularly beneath oceanic <lithosphere>, but mechanical weakness and seismic <speed> are distinct properties.
