A <photodiode> with a strong internal <electric field> in which photogenerated charge carriers undergo <impact ionization>, amplifying the initial signal. Linear multiplication below breakdown and saturated single-event operation above breakdown are distinct operating regimes. A <single-photon avalanche diode> uses the latter.
