B. Passlick is the first-listed author of a 1989 study distinguishing a <monocyte> subpopulation in human peripheral blood. The study combined measurements of the surface markers <CD14> and <CD16> by <flow cytometry>. Cells expressing both markers were assigned to the <monocyte> lineage using their appearance, additional molecular markers and functional measurements, rather than relying on one marker alone.<Identification and characterization of a novel monocyte subpopulation in human peripheral blood by B. Passlick and others>[Abstract, Blood 74 (1989), pp. 2527–2534; PMID 2478233.]{ref}

A useful way to understand the experiment is to imagine plotting <CD14> signal horizontally and <CD16> signal vertically for individual <cells>. Two <cells> with similar <CD14> signals can occupy different positions because their <CD16> signals differ. A single-marker measurement would conceal that distinction. The paper also compared light scattering and cell size between the identified subset and the other <monocytes>, giving independent evidence that the two-marker pattern accompanied other cellular differences.<Identification and characterization of a novel monocyte subpopulation in human peripheral blood by B.
