= Background structure
Geometric or field data held fixed when a theory's dynamical degrees of freedom vary. The <Minkowski metric> is background structure in ordinary <special relativity>; the spacetime <metric tensor> is dynamical in <general relativity>. A fixed timelike vector field can introduce a preferred direction even when an equation is written using <tensor notation>.
