= Bacterial initiation factor IF1
\b[Bacterial initiation factor IF1] is a <bacterial translation initiation factor> that binds at the <ribosomal A site> of the <30S ribosomal subunit>. Occupying that position helps organize initiation around the <ribosomal P site>, where the <initiator transfer RNA> must be placed. <X-ray crystallography> showed that IF1 occludes the A site and changes the arrangement of nearby <16S ribosomal RNA> bases, with conformational effects extending through the subunit.<Crystal structure of an initiation factor bound to the 30S ribosomal subunit by A. P. Carter and others>[Abstract, IF1–30S structure and A1492/A1493 displacement]{ref}
IF1 also cooperates with <bacterial initiation factor IF2> and <bacterial initiation factor IF3>. In a reconstituted assembly experiment, recruiting IF1 stabilized an otherwise short-lived factor complex. Occupying a site and stabilizing neighboring components are complementary functions.<Real-time assembly landscape of bacterial 30S translation initiation complex by Pohl Milón and others>[Abstract and Figure2, IF1 recruitment and stabilization]{ref}
For an original experimental comparison, measure the time that a fluorescently labeled factor remains bound with and without IF1, while keeping other components fixed. A change in residence time would indicate altered assembly stability. A separate <biological translation> readout is still needed to establish that the stabilized assembly produces <protein>; stable binding alone does not prove productive initiation.
