An instrument measuring atmospheric <pressure>. A mercury <barometer> compares the <hydrostatic pressure> of a measured mercury column with the pressure above it. Its equation is $p_{\rm atm}=p_t+\rho gh$, with $h$ the vertical separation of the liquid levels.
