<Ben Straub> coauthored the 2014 second edition of <Pro Git by Scott Chacon and Ben Straub> with <Scott Chacon>. The book explains <Git (version control)> through <version-control snapshots>[snapshots], object relationships, <version-control branches>[branches] and collaborative workflows.<Pro Git by Scott Chacon and Ben Straub>[official second-edition byline and Chapters2–3]{ref}

Its <version-control branch>[branch] model gives a useful technical distinction: a <version-control branch>[branch] name refers to a <version-control commit>[commit], while the <version-control commit>[commit] and its parent links record history. Moving a <version-control branch>[branch] reference does not rewrite every historical <file>. Understanding that representation makes <version-control merging>[merging], recovery and inspection easier to reason about than treating each command as an unrelated operation.
