The initial segment of a <Markov chain Monte Carlo> run discarded to reduce dependence on its starting state. A fixed discarded count is a choice to assess using <Markov chain Monte Carlo convergence diagnostics>, not a proof that the retained sample has reached its <stationary distribution>.
