The scientific question was how an epithelium maintains different apical and basolateral domains. A scaffold can organize several interacting components at one location, so its role is not exhausted by its abundance. Interaction evidence and localization evidence together constrain a <cell polarity> mechanism, although neither alone proves every step of assembly.
