<C. V. Raman> and <K. S. Krishnan> observed additional <spectral lines> in <light> scattered by <liquids>. Filtering the illumination made it possible to distinguish these new components from lines already present in the incident <spectrum>. In the <Raman effect>, exchanged <energy> changes the scattered <photon>'s <frequency>, providing information about molecular <energy levels>. The experiment thus turned a faint part of <scattering of light> into a probe of molecular structure.<The Optical Analogue of the Compton Effect by Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman and Kariamanikkam Srinivasa Krishnan>[1928 report, filtered incident light and additional scattered spectral lines]{ref}
