An endpoint label attached to an open string. With several coincident branes, two endpoint labels organize the massless open-string fields as matrices and give nonabelian gauge symmetry. Strings between different stacks carry representations associated with the two endpoint groups. These labels are physical internal degrees of freedom, not extra spacetime coordinates.
