Compositional convection (source code)

= Compositional convection

Compositional convection is buoyancy-driven motion caused by composition-dependent density variations. In a planetary core, freezing can expel light elements into the surrounding liquid, making that liquid buoyant and supplying mechanical power for a <planetary dynamo>. It can operate alongside thermally driven <convection> and release of <latent heat>.
