An organized region of buoyant rising fluid and compensating descending flow that transports heat or composition. <Convection rolls> are a simple planar example; <solar granules> are evolving compressible examples. A cellular pattern does not require every material trajectory to form a closed streamline, especially near a radiating free surface.
