The Coulomb logarithm $\log\Lambda=\log(b_{\max}/b_{\min})$ collects the logarithmically equal contributions of gravitational encounters over a wide range of impact parameters. For a self-gravitating system of $N$ comparable stars, $\Lambda$ is of order $N$.
