A <cyclic osmate ester> contains the newly formed <carbon>–<oxygen> bonds of an osmium-mediated <alkene> <dihydroxylation>. Both <oxygen> atoms attach on the same face; hydrolytic cleavage of metal–<oxygen> bonds releases the diol.
