An ideal <dashpot> resists relative motion with force proportional to velocity. Maintaining a displacement rate $\dot x$ requires force $\mu\dot x$ and dissipates power $\mu\dot x^2$ for $\mu>0$. Connecting it in parallel or series with a <spring> gives different constitutive laws.
