Mixing across surfaces of constant <density>, or <isopycnals>. In the deep ocean, breaking <internal waves> can supply the mechanical <energy> needed to mix against stable <stratification>. The divergence of the turbulent <buoyancy flux> determines local <water-mass transformation>.
