A numerical representation of surface elevation sampled over a horizontal grid or another spatial mesh. A hillshaded rendering highlights slope geometry but depends on artificial illumination direction. A <digital elevation model> also supplies the topographic phase needed in <interferometric synthetic-aperture radar> processing.
