Dissociative substitution
= Dissociative substitution
A <dissociative substitution> loses a ligand before binding the incoming replacement. A saturated 18-electron carbonyl can first form a 16-electron intermediate; the dissociation barrier and intermediate rearrangement influence rates and product geometry.
