Finitary relation 2026-10-31
A subset of a finite Cartesian product specifies which tuples of elements satisfy a relation. A first-order structure interprets a relation symbol with argument places as such a subset of the -fold Cartesian product of its domain of a first-order structure. For two argument places this is a binary relation; for three, the set of triples satisfying is an example involving addition.
Totality of the binary relation is expressed by
When is already an order, this adds comparability and makes it a total order. In fact this first-order sentence alone entails .
By the definition of semantic entailment, means that every first-order structure satisfying also satisfies . Let be any such first-order structure, and let be any element of its domain of a first-order structure. The instance of with gives , which is true only if is true. Since was arbitrary, . Therefore
There is no exception for in the displayed totality axiom; that case is exactly what forces the reflexive relation property.
