Doob decomposition of an adapted integrable process
= Doob decomposition of an adapted integrable process
Every adapted integrable process $X$ has a unique decomposition $X=M+A$, where $M$ is a martingale, $A_0=0$, and $A$ is predictable. Its increments are
$$
A_{n+1}-A_n
=\mathbb E[X_{n+1}-X_n\mid\mathcal F_n].
$$
For a supermartingale these increments are nonpositive; changing the sign of $A$ gives the usual nondecreasing compensator convention.
