Earth's outer core is a liquid, electrically conducting region whose buoyant motion and rotation sustain the <geodynamo>. Its <magnetic field> both responds to the flow through induction and modifies that flow through the <Lorentz force>. A prescribed-velocity kinematic model describes onset rather than the entire nonlinear core dynamics.
