Electromagnetic mode density in a box
= Electromagnetic mode density in a box
In a large periodic box of volume $V$, one polarization has $V/(2\pi)^3$ wavevector modes per unit $d^3k$. The two transverse photon polarizations therefore give
$$
dN=\frac{2V}{(2\pi)^3}\,d^3k
=\frac{V}{\pi^2}k^2\,dk
$$
after integration over directions.
