= Eliassen equation for residual circulation

For constant Coriolis parameter $f_0$ and <buoyancy frequency> $N$, thermal-wind balance and transformed mean-flow equations give
$$
f_0^2\chi_{zz}^*+N^2\chi_{yy}^*
=-f_0(\nabla\mathbin\cdot\mathbf F)_z,
$$
where $\chi^*$ is the residual-circulation streamfunction and $\mathbf F$ is the <Eliassen–Palm flux>.
