Emmy Noether proved the fundamental connection between continuous <symmetries> of a variational problem and <conservation laws>. Her 1918 paper also gives identities among the <Euler Lagrange equations> for symmetries depending on arbitrary functions, a foundation for understanding <gauge symmetry>.
