A lateral separation between adjacent or overlapping <fault> strands. Displacement transfer can be accommodated by distributed deformation, a tilted <relay ramp>, or a connecting <fault>. Its releasing or restraining effect depends on both the stepping direction and the sense of <fault slip>.
