A <Fayet–Iliopoulos term> is a gauge-invariant term linear in the auxiliary $D$ field of an Abelian <vector multiplet>. Supersymmetry is broken only if no charged-scalar configuration can make the shifted D-term vanish simultaneously with every F-term.
