A member of a vascular-plant lineage generally reproducing through <spores> rather than <seeds>. Most familiar fern bodies are <sporophytes>; their <gametophytes> can have different environmental requirements. <heterospory> and other life-cycle differences prevent treating every fern as one identical model.
