A <flat band> has energy independent of wavevector, and hence zero <group velocity>. A nearly flat band has small dispersion and, near a parabolic extremum, large <band effective mass>. Coupling a <flat band> to a dispersive band can produce an <avoided crossing> and a <hybridization gap>.
