For an autonomous ordinary differential equation, the flow map $\varphi_t$ sends each initial state to its state after time $t$. Uniqueness gives $\varphi_{t+s}=\varphi_t\circ\varphi_s$ and $\varphi_{-t}=\varphi_t^{-1}$ whenever both sides exist.
