A <fractional polynomial> uses selected real powers of a positive covariate to model a smooth regression effect. Power zero denotes a logarithm, and a repeated power can generate a term $x^p\log x$. Such terms permit a wider family than ordinary integer-power polynomials, but their selection adds modeling uncertainty and requires validation.
