Electronic excitation occurs rapidly compared with nuclear motion. In the Condon approximation, vibronic intensities are proportional to squared overlaps of initial and final vibrational <wavefunctions>; vertical arrows on a potential diagram summarize this overlap rather than a nuclear trajectory.
