If $T$ is compact and $\lambda\ne0$, then $T-\lambda I$ is injective exactly when it is surjective. Equivalently, every nonzero point of the spectrum of $T$ is an eigenvalue. Compactness turns an approximate eigenvector sequence into a convergent eigenvector sequence.
