For a nowhere-zero one-form $\alpha$, the hyperplane distribution $\ker\alpha$ is tangent to hypersurfaces exactly when $\alpha\wedge d\alpha=0$. In relativity this characterizes hypersurface-orthogonal vector fields and implies vanishing twist.
