<Galactic disk heating> increases the random velocities of <stars> through encounters with <molecular clouds>, nonaxisymmetric gravitational disturbances, and other perturbations. Older <stellar populations> usually have larger <velocity dispersions> and greater vertical thickness, although birth conditions and migration also affect the relation.
