= Generalized momentum
The generalized, or conjugate, momentum associated with a coordinate $q_i$ is
$$
p_i=\frac{\partial L}{\partial\dot q_i}.
$$
In <Lagrangian mechanics>, the coordinate variable describes the configuration; its conjugate momentum need not equal the Cartesian mechanical momentum.
