<Gerard 't Hooft> showed how theories with massive <gauge fields> described by <Yang-Mills theory> generated through <spontaneous symmetry breaking> could support consistent <renormalization>. His 1971 paper constructs models, derives <Feynman rules> and checks the associated <Ward identities>. Controlling these identities while removing divergent intermediate expressions is what permits finite higher-order predictions without losing the theory's gauge consistency. The work made spontaneously broken gauge theories usable for precision particle calculations.<Renormalizable Lagrangians for massive Yang-Mills fields by Gerardus 't Hooft>[1971 abstract: renormalizable models, path-integral rules, Ward identities and unitary spectrum]{ref}
