A cascade of nuclear interactions and secondary <hadrons> produced when an energetic <hadron> traverses matter. Neutral-pion decay supplies an electromagnetic component. Nuclear breakup, unobserved low-energy particles and leakage affect the visible response of a hadronic <calorimeter>.
