Attaching an index-$k$ handle to an $n$-dimensional <manifold with boundary> glues $D^k\times D^{n-k}$ along $\partial D^k\times D^{n-k}$. The complementary $D^k\times\partial D^{n-k}$ replaces the attaching region in the boundary.
