An aminoglycoside <antibiotic> that interferes with <bacterial> <protein> synthesis. Resistance can provide a <selectable marker> in <molecular genetics>, as in the <1973 plasmid construction experiment>; survival under selection identifies a <phenotype> rather than every detail of the inserted <DNA>.
