The Kronecker symbol extends the <Jacobi symbol> to all integer denominators. For a fundamental discriminant $D$, the function $\chi_D(n)=\left(\frac Dn\right)$ is the primitive quadratic <Dirichlet character> associated with $\mathbb Q(\sqrt D)$.
