A <leaf> is a <plant> <organ> commonly specialized for <light> capture and <photosynthesis>, with internal transport and regulated surface exchange. Modified leaves can instead emphasize storage, protection or other functions. A <cotyledon> is an embryonic <leaf>, so function alone does not define <organ> identity.
