{synonym}
A stimulus passes through a linear temporal or spatial filter, then a nonnegative nonlinear rate function. A conditionally <Inhomogeneous Poisson process> generates spikes at that rate. The filter and nonlinearity can be fitted from data and tested on held-out trials. Refractoriness and spike-history correlations require extensions beyond this basic cascade.
