A Love wave is a horizontally polarized shear wave trapped in a slower elastic surface layer above a faster elastic half-space. Zero shear traction at the free surface, displacement continuity and traction continuity at the interface produce its dispersion relation. A trapped mode has phase speed between the two shear speeds and decays exponentially into the half-space.
